QUESTIONS FREQUENTLY ASKED ABOUT SONG CIRCLE

Music Theory Lessons with cat!
We are a ladies' choir based in Mid-Suffolk, joining women and communities together in song. Whether you love to sing or have never sung, Song Circle will welcome you with open arms. This page is designed to answer any questions you might have ...

Question: What's your story?

Answer: The choir was formed four years ago by Anna Winton Mills, a well-known local musician with four decades' teaching experience. In that time we've grown to have over 100 active members spread over five (very relaxed and friendly) rehearsal groups.

Question: What sort of music do you sing?

Answer: We cover a broad range of music from musicals to pop songs to light classical and other well known pieces. Some songs are sung in unison (everyone singing the same tune) but most are sung in harmony. If that sounds challenging, please see the next section below!

Question : I want to learn to sing but have never done this and can't read music. Does that matter?

Answer : It absolutely does not matter! Anna will teach you to sing! Each rehearsal group sits in a circle so that Anna can give each member the teaching and encouragement they need. You will sit with more experienced members of the choir who can help you and guide you along.
Also Anna provides recorded teaching resources for some of the songs that will help you learn the notes you need to sing.

Question : I'm a more experienced singer. Is there room in the choir for me?

Answer : Yes absolutely! We believe in building a broad musical community. We need experienced singers to do this! Not least because you can help guide the less experienced singers in the circle.

Question : How much does it cost?

Answer : Your introductory session to the choir is FREE!
Come along and decide whether we're a good fit for you.

After that, if you decide you want to join, then your membership is £8 a week, paid in advance termly. To give you an idea: the autumn term is currently 13 weeks long (14 if you count half term), so that's £104 for a whole term's rehearsals. You can go to as many as you want in the week AND have access to the teaching resources to practice at home.
Plus there's an annual cost of £18 to allow you to legally download scores from our site.

Question : I'm feeling a bit nervous. Is there a community that will support me?

Answer : Yes! Anna very much sees the choir as a supportive community. We welcome each new member and try to ensure that everyone is supported when they first join us. We always have a natter before rehearsals and during the tea break. Anna and all the members of your rehearsal group are also available to chat on Messenger during the week.
We also do a fair bit of socialising and having fun. There's always cake after our concerts (lots of cake!).
Plus the local reps who look after the interests of each individual rehearsal group have been working hard on extracurricular events for the choir. There have been trips to see musicals, various fund-raising events were organised and of course there's usually a Christmas meal...

Question : I see you perform in churches a lot. Why is that?

Answer : We perform a lot in churches because the acoustics are so good and because they're wonderful places to hold concerts. However we are not affiliated with any one religious group. Anna believes in building a broad musical community of ladies from whatever background.

Question : Ok this all sounds good ... what's the next step?
